By now, most people are familiar with the term “AI” as major tech companies have been extensively incorporating it into their products and marketing efforts.
During the recent Google I/O event, the word “AI” was mentioned a staggering 121 times, reflecting the company’s emphasis on artificial intelligence.
Microsoft, too, has been actively embracing AI. At a recent media-only event, the company unveiled several AI-powered features alongside the new Surface Laptops.
These features are currently exclusive to Qualcomm-powered devices running Windows 11 but will be available on future Copilot+ PCs. Among the notable announcements, here are a few highlights:
1. Recall
Finding a specific photo, email, or file from days ago can be frustrating and time-consuming. Microsoft’s new Recall feature aims to solve this issue.
Powered by advanced large language models, Recall allows users to locate anything they’ve seen or done on their PC with a simple search query. It works across all applications, making it easier to find content like text, images, and videos.
For example, if you search for “blue dress” in Windows 11, Recall will gather all the relevant content viewed on your device. If you need to find a specific item, such as a “blue pantsuit with sequin lace from grandma,” Recall will quickly locate it, saving you the hassle of scrolling through hundreds of messages.
Microsoft ensures that the Recall index is stored locally on the device and will not be used to train any AI models, ensuring user privacy. Users can also customize Recall to exclude certain websites or apps, further protecting private content.
2. Live Translations
Live Translations offers instant real-time translation from 44 languages into English during any video or audio call. This feature can also be used while watching movies, providing live captions that turn into English subtitles in real-time.
3. Windows Studio Effects
To enhance video calls, the webcams in the new Surface devices include AI-powered Windows Studio Effects. These effects offer creative filters in three styles—illustrated, animated, and watercolor. Additional features include:
- Portrait Light: Adjusts lighting for a more natural appearance.
- Eye Contact: Ensures your eyes appear to look at the camera even if you’re looking elsewhere.
- Portrait Blur: Adds a blurred background.
- Voice Focus: Enhances audio and reduces background noise.
4. Cocreator
The Cocreator feature in Paint uses AI to enhance your drawings. Users can type what they’d like to create, draw it, and Cocreator will generate an AI-enhanced version of the drawing.
For instance, if you type “peaceful lake high in the mountains” and draw mountains, Cocreator will produce an enriched version to add to your canvas, allowing further customization and detail.
