Airtel Money has partnered with Moja Expressway Company to simplify toll payments for the Nairobi Expressway.
Previously, M-Pesa was the default mobile money payment option for tolls, but now you can use Airtel Money for both Manual Toll Collection (MTC) and Electronic Toll Collection (ETC).
How to Pay for the Nairobi Expressway Using Airtel Money
1) Manual Toll Collection (MTC)
If you’re using MTC, follow these steps:
- Provide your Airtel-registered number to the attendant at the exit.
- Wait for a push notification showing the amount to pay.
- Enter your Airtel Money PIN to complete the transaction.
2) Electronic Toll Collection (ETC)
For ETC users, topping up your account is easy:
- Dial *819# on your Airtel line.
- Select the “Top Up ETC” option and follow the prompts to load funds into your ETC account.
- Alternatively, visit the Moja Expressway website and use Airtel Money as the payment method.
This method preloads funds into your ETC account, allowing automatic toll deductions and a seamless drive without stopping.
Free Transactions Through January 2025
As part of Airtel’s festive season offer, payments via Airtel Money on the Nairobi Expressway will attract zero transaction charges (excluding partner fees) until the end of January 2025.
Nairobi Expressway Toll Charges
The Nairobi Expressway spans 27 km, connecting Mlolongo near JKIA to James Gichuru Junction on Waiyaki Way. Since its completion in 2022, it has been a key route for faster commuting through Nairobi.
However, it is the only tolled road in the city, and toll charges increased at the start of 2024. The new rates range from KES 170 to KES 500, up from the previous KES 100 to KES 310.
Here are some key details on the new 2024 toll charges:
- Mlolongo to Eastern Bypass: KES 250
- Mlolongo to Southern Bypass: KES 330
- Mlolongo to Capital Centre or Haile Selassie: KES 410
- Mlolongo to Museum Hill or Westlands: KES 500
- Shorter routes like Syokimau-SGR or JKIA-Eastern Bypass: KES 170
Charges for heavier vehicles are higher, with rates depending on axle count. For example, trucks with more than two axles pay up to five times these amounts.
