Since 2016, Android users have been able to utilize Facebook Messenger as an SMS app, but this integration is set to be phased out next month, with a discontinuation date of September 28, 2023. Users who have been relying on Facebook Messenger for SMS and MMS communication are now receiving notifications about this upcoming change.

Facebook Messenger initially offered SMS support in 2012, but this feature was removed in 2013. In 2016, the company reintroduced SMS functionality, keeping it separate from web-based communications. These SMS threads were distinguishably themed in purple, contrasting with the default blue theme for other messages. Facebook described this experience as “SMS on steroids.”

Impact on User Experience and Industry Dynamics
The discontinuation of SMS integration in Messenger is likely to affect users who appreciated the convenience of having SMS and app-based messaging consolidated in one platform. While Messenger is a popular service, Meta’s strategic focus appears to have shifted, especially with WhatsApp being another major messaging service under its purview.
This development is potentially advantageous for Google and its ongoing efforts with Rich Communication Services (RCS) – a protocol aimed at enhancing the messaging experience. Google has prioritized messaging as a first-party Android experience, while many carriers and device manufacturers have adopted the Google Messages app as the default messaging application
