Overview of the 2024 KPSEA
The KPSEA was conducted between October 28 and November 1, 2024. It assessed Grade 6 students on various subjects, including Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Integrated Science, Creative Arts, and Social Studies.
This evaluation plays a significant role in shaping Kenya’s education landscape by focusing on learners’ ability to apply knowledge and skills, rather than emphasizing traditional memorization.
The KPSEA is a critical component of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), designed to replace the old 8-4-4 system.
One notable aspect of this year’s KPSEA is the assessment structure. While learners are not ranked, their results will account for 20% of the cumulative grade for junior secondary school.

This grade will include another 20% contribution from a school-based assessment conducted in Grade 7 and 60% from a summative evaluation at the end of Grade 9.
This approach ensures a more holistic evaluation of students’ abilities over time.
What Lies Ahead for Learners After KPSEA
Upon completion of Grade 6, students who sat for the KPSEA will proceed to Grade 9 in 2025. Grade 9 represents the final phase of junior secondary school and includes nine key learning areas.
These areas are English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Religious Education (Christian, Islamic, or Hindu), Agriculture, Social Studies (covering History, Geography, and Life Skills), Pre-technical Studies (such as Business and Computer Studies), Creative Arts and Sports (including Physical Education and Visual Arts), and Integrated Science (combining Physics, Chemistry, and Biology).
The introduction of these learning areas in Grade 9 helps broaden the students’ educational exposure and prepares them for specialization.
In 2026, learners will transition to senior school, where they will enter one of three core pathways: Arts and Sports Science, Social Sciences, or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
These pathways are designed to match students’ interests and capabilities, offering diverse opportunities for academic and career growth.
