Traveling across Africa’s vast landscapes can be a daunting task, with limited access to reliable transportation options and inefficient booking systems.
However, BuuPass, a Kenyan startup, is on a mission to transform the intercity bus and transportation industry by digitizing operations and providing a seamless booking experience for travelers across the continent.
“We identified that 95 percent of the African intercity transport market is still undigitised. Bus operators lack tools to digitise, leading to inefficiencies and poor customer experience. On the consumer side, there was no platform to compare and book tickets. Our main competitors are traditional offline operators and local e-ticketing players,” Kabra said.
Despite the rapid growth of technology in various sectors, the intercity transport market in Africa remains largely undigitized. This lack of digitization has led to inefficiencies, poor customer experiences, and operational challenges for bus operators.
BuuPass recognized this gap and set out to create a platform that would not only cater to consumers but also empower bus operators with the tools they need to streamline their operations.
The BuuPass Solution
Launched in 2016 by Sonia Kabra and Wyclife Omondi, BuuPass is a B2B2C mobility marketplace that enables users to search, compare, and book travel tickets via web, app, or USSD.
The platform’s user-friendly interface allows travelers to explore various options and make informed decisions based on their preferences and budgets.

On the other hand, BuuPass’ SaaS platform equips bus operators with the necessary tools to manage their operations, inventory, and sales effectively.
This two-sided approach not only enhances the customer experience but also empowers bus operators to optimize their businesses and improve efficiency.
Rapid Growth and Expansion
BuuPass’ innovative approach has garnered significant attention and success. To date, the startup has sold over 16 million travel tickets and generated over US$100 million in total value of goods sold.
Additionally, BuuPass has participated in the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and received backing from the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund, further solidifying its position as a trailblazer in the industry.
Fueled by its recent acquisition of Kenyan bus ticketing venture QuickBus, BuuPass is now live in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda. “We have aggressive expansion plans to enter eight new markets by 2025, with Tanzania being our next target,” said Kabra.
However, the startup’s ambitions don’t stop there. Sonia Kabra, the co-founder of BuuPass, revealed plans to expand into eight additional markets by 2025, with Tanzania being the next target.
“Our playbook involves B2B sales for bus digitisation, B2C marketing, and partnerships with telcos and banks,” Kabra said. “We generate revenue through commissions on bus, train, and flight tickets.”
BuuPass’ expansion strategy is multifaceted, involving B2B sales for bus digitization, B2C marketing, and partnerships with telcos and banks. The startup generates revenue through commissions on bus, train, and flight tickets, ensuring a sustainable business model.
While challenges such as slow digitization by bus operators, building a two-sided marketplace, the impact of COVID-19 on travel, and expansion into new markets have presented hurdles, “However, we are overcoming these challenges through a focused expansion playbook, strengthening our team, and honing our go-to-market models,” said Kabra.
