In a world where laptop form factors have remained relatively unchanged, Lenovo is breaking the mold with its latest announcement at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024).
Introducing ‘Project Crystal,’ an experimental transparent-screen concept laptop that combines the power of artificial intelligence (AI) with a cutting-edge design.
This revolutionary device, also known as the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept, features a blank and borderless transparent screen that utilizes AI to deliver an immersive computing experience.
Availability
Before getting too excited, it’s important to note that Project Crystal is currently just a proof-of-concept prototype, and Lenovo has no immediate plans to bring it to market as an available product.
While the innovative transparent display technology shows promise, Project Crystal serves more as a demonstration that such an idea is possible than as a precursor to an upcoming laptop release.
This is not yet a real product that consumers will be able to purchase. However, some of the concepts and innovations showcased with Project Crystal could very well make their way into future Lenovo devices.

For now, Project Crystal gives a glimpse into the future and serves as an impressive technological achievement, even if it never matures into an actual transparent laptop sold to the public. Check out the video and details below for a closer look at this forward-thinking concept.
Lenovo’s ‘Project Crystal’: A Transparent Laptop Experience
The transparent screen on Project Crystal utilizes Lenovo’s proprietary Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC). This advanced AI technology transforms the clear display into a functional laptop screen that can be used for common computing tasks like browsing the web, watching videos, or working on documents.

Thanks to the microLED technology, the transparent display offers vivid colors, sharp 4K visuals, a fast 120Hz refresh rate, and up to 1000 nits of brightness. Lenovo states that this will allow for excellent visibility, whether indoors or outdoors.
The futuristic AI-powered screen overlays the digital interface onto the transparent display. This creates an immersive augmented reality experience by seamlessly fusing the virtual and physical worlds.
Part of Lenovo’s Focus on Innovative Concepts
Lenovo has showcased various avant-garde concepts and devices recently that highlight their commitment to pushing boundaries. Last year at CES 2023, they revealed an adaptive display Motorola smartphone prototype that could bend and flex into a slap bracelet worn on the wrist.
Project Crystal continues Lenovo’s focus on unique technology like flexible displays, augmented reality, and AI image generation. While still a concept device not currently available to consumers, Lenovo plans to eventually bring innovations like this transparent laptop to market.
Fully Transparent Keyboard and Touchpad
In addition to the see-through screen, Project Crystal features a transparent keyboard and touchpad area. The intelligent keyboard transforms into a drawing tablet when used with a supported digital pen.
This allows full use of the expansive 17.3-inch transparent display as an interactive workspace, without needing any external accessories. The transparent keyboard and pad perfectly complement the futuristic, minimalist aesthetic.
Focused on “Invisible Technology” Experiences
Lenovo states that transparent devices like Project Crystal enable more “invisible technology” experiences where the hardware fades away. The AIGC AI and microLED screen mean no bezel, speakers, webcam, or ports are visible on Project Crystal.
Lenovo believes concepts like this represent the future of laptops, evolving into more subtle, omnipresent displays for work and entertainment. The company is focused on developing experiences where technology “disappears” in the background.
Pushing the Boundaries of Laptop Design
Major laptop design elements like the screen, keyboard, and overall chassis have remained mostly unchanged over the past decade. Lenovo’s ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept represents an exciting future for computing.
Concepts like Project Crystal with its AI-enabled fully transparent display illustrate how companies like Lenovo aim to reimagine devices. Their innovative concepts create completely new, immersive user experiences.
While still early prototype devices not yet available to the public, the innovations showcased in concepts like Project Crystal could become the norm in laptop and mobile device design in the coming years. Lenovo has proven itself as a leader in pushing the boundaries with its forward-thinking vision.
