Liquid Intelligent Technologies, a pan-African tech group, has lit up a new 1000km fibre link between Kenya and Ethiopia. This carrier-grade route provides high-speed, reliable connectivity between the two nations to drive digital transformation.
Spanning from Nairobi to Mega, the link offers four terabits per second (Tbps) capacity. By enhancing regional connectivity, the milestone promises greater digital trade and investment between Kenya and Ethiopia.
The Kenya-Ethiopia Connection: Bridging Business and Data
Spanning a remarkable 1000 kilometers, the fiber link connecting Kenya and Ethiopia presents an incredible opportunity for businesses in Ethiopia. This infrastructure allows them access to data centers and cloud services in Nairobi, Kenya, while ensuring that data remains within the African continent.
The importance of this link cannot be overstated, as it fosters closer ties between these nations and fuels trade and investment.
Furthermore, this groundbreaking link is complemented by the cross-border 711-kilometer connection between Zambia and Malawi. This connection establishes a direct and reliable route to content caches and data centers in South Africa, further enriching regional connectivity.
Adil El Youssefi on the Significance of the Link
Adil El Youssefi, CEO Rest of Africa at Liquid Intelligent Technologies, emphasizes the pivotal role this connection plays in the region. He notes, “Kenyan and Ethiopian businesses are rapidly adopting digital technologies, and this new link will enable trade and investment between these two great nations in our region.
For Liquid Kenya, we see this growing demand being catalyzed by the Kenya Kwanza Government’s Digital Superhighway Initiative, and this 1000 km of newly lit fiber is our first contribution to the private sector investment into this flagship project.”
Partnerships for Growth
Liquid’s success in launching these routes stems from partnerships with key entities. Collaborating with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) and Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP), Liquid’s new link bridges Nairobi and Mega, a town in southern Ethiopia.
This link boasts an impressive capacity of four terabytes per second, setting a high standard for connectivity. By expanding their investment in Ethiopia, Liquid reaffirms its commitment to sparking transformation, job creation, and growth across the continent.
Cassava Technologies: Pioneering the Digital Future
Hardy Pemhiwa, President and Group CEO of Cassava Technologies, emphasizes the broader vision behind these initiatives. “All initiatives undertaken by businesses under Cassava Technologies work towards realizing our vision of a digitally connected future that leaves no African behind.
The completion of these fiber links is yet another milestone achieved by Liquid as it continues to lay the foundations of economic growth through increased access to high-speed connectivity.”
Benefits of the Fiber Network
The newly established fiber network promises a host of benefits for Kenya and Ethiopia. It not only enhances connectivity performance but also improves accessibility, especially for underserved towns such as Suswa, Sereolipi, Ndaragwa, and Marsabit. This expansion of connectivity extends to major urban centers like Nairobi and Mega, ensuring a more inclusive digital landscape.
