OpenAI has finally launched its GPT Store platform this week, allowing users to publicly share their own customized chatbots built using the company’s AI technology.
The store’s launch comes after multiple delays since originally being announced last November.
The Rise of GPTs
Since the announcement of the GPT Builder program in November, OpenAI has seen a surge in bot creation. More than 3 million bots, known as GPTs, have been created by users.
The company plans to highlight useful GPTs weekly inside the store, providing a platform for creators to showcase their work.
This demonstrates strong demand for the ability to build specialized chatbots optimized for specific use cases.

Revenue Sharing
OpenAI has also announced a revenue sharing program with GPT creators, set to start in the first quarter of the year. GPT builders will be paid based on user engagement with their chatbots.
“Revenue sharing is important,” Altman said at a press conference at the November announcement of GPTs. “We’re going to pay people who build the most useful GPTs a portion of our revenue.”

App store operators like Apple and Google typically carve off a portion of app store revenue for themselves, often 30%. Just what OpenAI will do remains to be seen.
While the specifics of this program are yet to be shared, it’s clear that OpenAI plans to make GPTs into a new business for itself and for GPT authors.
Ensuring Safety and Compliance
Ahead of the GPT Store’s opening, OpenAI established a new review system to ensure custom GPTs meet its brand guidelines and usage policies.
It also updated how to report GPTs users find harmful or unsafe, demonstrating its commitment to user safety.
Store Initially Launching for Paying ChatGPT Subscribers
The GPT Store first rolls out to premium subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, and the newly announced Team tier. Over time, availability may expand to include free users.
For now, the ability to access and share custom bots requires a paid subscription.
New ChatGPT Team Tier Tailored for Small Teams
The GPT Store will roll out to users of ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users, along with subscribers to a new tier called Team.
ChatGPT Team, a paid version of ChatGPT targeted for smaller teams of around 150 people, offers access to GPT-4, DALL-E 3, and OpenAI’s Advanced Data Analysis feature, and control over data.
Subscribers to ChatGPT Team can also create custom GPTs for their teams’ specific needs or use other GPTs on the store.
Launch Cements OpenAI’s Leadership in Conversational AI
The public sharing of customized chatbots represents a milestone for making AI technology more specialized, useful, and accessible to the average consumer.
As the first mover in enabling bot sharing, the launch further cements OpenAI as an innovator and leader in the red-hot conversational AI sector.
