Safaricom, Kenya’s leading telecommunications company, has stepped forward with a generous donation of KES 50 million to aid victims of the recent Finance Bill 2024 protests and improve hospital infrastructure.
The announcement was made at Kenyatta National Hospital, where Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa emphasized the company’s dedication to supporting Kenyans during challenging times.
“Our Foundations are here to support the people, especially during emergencies. We are pleased to provide structured support to hospitals for infrastructure improvement and patient recovery,” Ndegwa stated.
The donation, made through Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations, includes Sh10 million for the hospital’s Disaster Response Centre and Sh5 million for direct support to injured protesters admitted to the hospital.
Comprehensive Support Package for Affected Individuals
The support package covers various essential needs, including assistive devices, smartphones, airtime for those who lost their phones during the protests, as well as three months’ worth of food and one year’s rent for individuals facing extreme hardship.
Additionally, Safaricom has allocated KES 12.5 million for similar initiatives across the country, focusing on establishing medical camps in affected areas.

Dr. Evanson Kamuri, CEO of Kenyatta Hospital, expressed gratitude for the partnership, saying, “We are happy to partner with Safaricom and continue to have a positive impact on Kenyans seeking medical assistance at this time of need.”
The company’s efforts extend beyond hospital support, with plans to set up medical camps in Githurai on July 6, 2024, followed by another in Rongai. These areas have experienced significant unrest, with reports of excessive force used by police against peaceful protesters.
Prior to Safaricom’s announcement, Kenyans had independently contributed over KES 29 Million via M-Changa to cover medical bills and legal aid for protesters affected by police brutality.
Background of the Protests and Government Response
The protests, initially triggered by public disapproval of the Finance Bill 2024, have led to widespread unrest in major Kenyan cities, resulting in over 40 deaths and extensive property damage.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has vowed decisive action against those responsible for the ensuing chaos.
#GenZforGenZ Initiative and Long-Term Strategy
Looking ahead, Safaricom has announced its #GenZforGenZ initiative, which aims to mobilize Gen Z employees and corporate partners for community outreaches, clean-ups, and additional medical camps.
The company’s long-term strategy includes empowering youth through TVET scholarships, economic opportunities in agribusiness, business training, micro-loans across 13 counties, and mental health support through strategic partnerships.
This announcement comes in the wake of recent calls to boycott Safaricom due to alleged complicity in an internet shutdown during the protests. The company has faced criticism over a claimed fibre cut, which international observers like NetBlocks have disputed, suggesting possible tampering at the Kenya Internet Exchange Point.
Addressing these concerns, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa reiterated the company’s commitment to privacy and trust, stating, “Safaricom remains committed to uplifting our communities and ensuring the well-being of all Kenyans, especially the youth who are our future.”
This initiative underscores Safaricom’s vision of restoration and resilience in the face of adversity, as the company works to rebuild trust and support communities affected by the recent unrest.
