Samsung Electronics, a global leader in mobile devices, this week announced a new multi-year strategic partnership with Google Cloud to bring advanced artificial intelligence capabilities to Samsung’s latest flagship Galaxy S24 smartphone series.
Unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event in San Jose, California, the Galaxy S24 phones will be the first mobile devices to deploy Google’s generative AI models, Gemini and Imagen, via the Google Vertex AI platform. This integration positions Samsung at the vanguard when it comes to delivering next-generation AI functionalities to smartphone consumers worldwide.
“We’re extremely excited that the Galaxy S24 series will be the first smartphone embedded with Gemini and Imagen AI models powered by Google Cloud,” commented Janghyun Yoon, Head of Software at Samsung’s Mobile division. “Through close collaboration between our engineering teams, we have successfully created a mobile experience that allows people to harness the creativity and convenience of leading-edge AI right from their pocket.”
Central to this is Gemini, Google’s versatile multimodal AI agent that can understand and manipulate different data modalities like text, images, video and code. Galaxy S24 users will be able to experience Gemini’s summarization capabilities on native Samsung apps, allowing quicker processing and digestion of information.
The partnership also opens up Imagen, Google DeepMind’s advanced text-to-image generator, for creative applications on mobile devices. Galaxy S24 users can leverage Imagen to enable intuitive photo editing features within the Gallery app.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, added: “Together with Samsung, we share a common vision of using AI responsibly to enrich people’s lives. With this partnership, Samsung developers will be able to tap into the power of Google Cloud’s infrastructure to build delightful AI experiences into their leading mobile applications.”
As part of the collaboration, Samsung will also enjoy early testing access to Gemini Ultra, which is one of the largest and most capable AI models created by Google to tackle highly complex cognitive tasks. In addition, the Galaxy S24 series incorporates Gemini Nano, an on-device AI introduced in Android 14, for efficient processing of AI requests directly on mobile hardware.
The Samsung-Google alliance is likely to accelerate the pace of AI adoption within the smartphone ecosystem and raise the bar on the immersive mobile experiences consumers should come to expect in the near future as AI capabilities expand exponentially.
It also solidifies Samsung’s and Google’s shared commitment to driving widespread, responsible use of artificial intelligence worldwide.
