Samsung Electronics on Thursday announced new updates to Bixby, their voice assistant. The new updates are set to improve user experience, performance and capabilities of the intelligent assistant and platform.
The new updates deliver significant improvements in Bixby’s ability with enhanced language recognition, giving people greater control over their mobile experience.
Let’s have a look at the updates.
1. Availability of Bixby Text Call in English
Samsung is expanding Bixby Text Call to English, taking inspiration from Google Pixel’s Call Screen. The feature debuted with One UI 5 in October 2022, but it was only available in Korea.
The Text-Call now works in English on the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, Z Fold 4, Flip 4, and other devices with the release of One UI 5.1.
When you’re on the phone, you can type what you want to say, and Bixby will convert it to audio and play it back to the caller.
This feature enables users to answer calls from anywhere by typing a message, which Bixby converts to audio and communicates to the caller directly on their behalf.
2. Ability To Personalize Bixby Text Call Voice
Users will now be able to customize Bixby’s Text Call voice using the custom voice creator option.
This new feature will allow users to record different sentences for Bixby to analyze and create an AI generated copy of their voice and tone.
Currently available in Korean, this generated voice is planned to be compatible with other Samsung apps beyond phone calls.
3. Ability To Customize A Wake-Up Phrase
Bixby is gaining support for a custom wake-up phrase, so you can record and use a hotword of your choice.
4. Bixby Will Now Provide More Seamless Continuity
With the introduction of new scenarios, such as playing music based on the type of exercise in Samsung Health or saving schedules in Calendar, the virtual assistant can provide more seamless continuity and be more attuned to user needs.
For example, users can first launch a workout on Samsung Health and then ask Bixby to play music that best suits that exercise by saying “Play music for this workout.”
5. Ability To Recognize and Process Commands Without an Active Internet Connection
Finally, thanks to on-device AI support, Bixby can recognize and process commands even when no internet connection is present. This includes common actions such as taking a screenshot, setting a timer, and so on.
Bixby’s on-device mode only supports English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Korean.
When Will You Get These New Bixby Update?
Samsung says it will start rolling out these improvements to Galaxy users in February 2023 through a software update.
