The Samsung System LSI division last year introduced an innovative security chip for debit and credit cards. This groundbreaking chip, known as the Biometric Card IC, incorporates a compact fingerprint reader, a secure element, and a secure processor. In order to provide a comprehensive understanding of its functioning, Samsung has released a new video, which you can watch below.
What is Samsung’s Biometric Card IC Security Chip?
Samsung’s Biometric Card IC security chip is a first-of-its-kind technology that combines a fingerprint reader, a secure element, and a secure processor within a small area of a credit or debit card. This groundbreaking chip provides an added layer of security for card transactions, removing the need for a PIN (Personal Identification Number) while protecting users against fraudulent transactions.
How Does it Work?
When you register for a card featuring Samsung’s Biometric Card IC, you can enroll up to three fingerprints with the card-issuing bank or firm. These fingerprints are then stored securely in the card’s Secure Element (SE). When you use the card for a transaction, simply place your finger on the designated fingerprint sensor area of the card. If the security chip authenticates your fingerprint, the transaction will take place without the need to enter a PIN.
Enhanced Security Features
The Biometric Card IC security chip is designed to detect fake fingerprints, ensuring that only authorized users can complete transactions. Additionally, the chip uses robust encryption technologies to prevent the transfer of enrolled fingerprints from the card to outside sources. This heightened level of security makes it nearly impossible for malicious actors to gain access to the cardholder’s personal information.

Compatibility with Existing Systems
One of the most significant advantages of Samsung’s Biometric Card IC is its compatibility with all existing Point of Sale (PoS) devices. This means that retailers and other businesses do not need to invest in new equipment to accept cards featuring this innovative security chip. This widespread compatibility will likely result in faster adoption of biometric technology in the financial sector.
Recognition and Awards
Samsung’s Biometric Card IC security chip has received widespread recognition for its innovative approach to financial security. The chip won the CES 2023 Best of Innovation Awards in the Cybersecurity & Personal Privacy category, highlighting its potential to transform the way we conduct financial transactions.
