Samsung is expected to launch the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 this year, and that comes new testing
According to a report from The Elec, the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s new foldable waterdrop hinge is undergoing testing over the next month as Samsung moves to finalize its design.
The report further indicates that the handset is being tested for 200,000 to 300,000 folds. Two hundred thousand folds is normal wear and tear, while 300,000 folds pushes the device’s build to its limit.
Samsung reportedly hopes the smartphone is capable of retaining 85 percent of its strength after 200,000 folds.
Being able to withstand 200,000 folds seems fairly standard for foldables now, and it’s the same threshold Samsung put on the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
Some foldables from OPPO, like the Find N2 and Xiaomi have been tested to withstand even more folds — as much as 400,000.
New Waterdrop Hinge
The new waterdrop hinge offers several benefits over the previous Z Fold 4, including allowing the screen to flex inwards as the handset closes instead of folding at a tight radius.
It’s speculated that Samsung hadn’t been using the waterdrop design because it wasn’t able to get an IP rating for its devices.
But now, it looks like things could change with the Galaxy Z Fold 5, as Ice Universe further shares that with the new hinge, “waterproof is finally here”, which could indicate that Samsung finally managed to find a way to use a new hinge design and keep the components on the inside dry and safe.
With the waterdrop hinge design, the crease should be less noticeable and there should be no gap when the phone is folded.
We’ve seen this waterdrop hinge on other foldables like the recently announced Tecno Phantom V Fold and it’s good to see Samsung finally adopting the tech.
The report indicates that Fold 5 is 14mm thin or less, down from the 16mm thickness of the Fold 4.
