Meta is now globally rolling out a new tagging feature for its private messaging app, Threads. As announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Thursday, users can now add tags—essentially hashtags with more customization options—to their Threads posts.
How Do Tags Work on Threads?
When composing a post on Threads, users can now tap the “#” symbol to start creating a tag. The key difference from hashtags is that with tags, you can type out an entire phrase instead of just one word.

Tags allow spaces and special characters, giving users more flexibility. However, there is a limit of only one tag per Thread post.
The Purpose Behind Threads Tags
Similar to hashtags, the purpose of tags on Threads is to help users connect with others talking about the same topics. As Meta’s Adam Mosseri explains, “it’s a great way to help dive deeper into your interests.”
For example, someone could search for a specific tag to find relevant conversations. Tags essentially make Threads posts more discoverable.
Early Impressions of the New Feature
I like Meta’s implementation here, even with the single-tag restriction. This seems like an effective way to prevent spammy usage.
That said, the utility of tags relies entirely on whether Threads users adopt them within their posts. We’ll have to wait and see if tags actually become a valuable way to search for and engage with content, like hashtags on other platforms.
Overall, the addition of tags represents an intriguing evolution for the Threads platform. By better enabling content discovery, it can help users build deeper connections around the topics they care about.
