Instagram made a grand entrance with the launch of Threads, enticing millions of users to switch over from X (formerly Twitter). However, the tides soon turned as Threads, with its limited set of features, experienced a significant drop in monthly active users. But there’s good news on the horizon! The long-awaited web version of Threads is set to finally debut this week, fulfilling one of the most sought-after user requests.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced on Friday that an update was in the works. According to The Wall Street Journal, the update was already being tested internally. Previously, users were limited in their ability to access all of the app’s features on the web and had to rely on their smartphones for full functionality.
In a Threads comment, Mosseri revealed, “We’ve been using an early version internally for a week or two. Still needs some work before we can roll it out to everyone though.” Despite some initial challenges, Threads has achieved significant success, attracting over 100 million users in its first week. However, data from SimilarWeb, which tracks website traffic, indicated a decline in user activity on Threads since its initial weeks, particularly among Android users.
According to their data, on the busiest day, July 7, there were 49 million daily active Android users worldwide. The following week, the number dropped to just 23.6 million daily active users, which is approximately a quarter of the initial audience.
In an effort to catch up with its competitor X, Threads has promised more updates in recent weeks. Mosseri and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg have assured users of improved search capabilities, among other enhancements. Some updates have already been implemented, such as post notifications for specific accounts and the introduction of a chronological feed.
