One year after Uber’s groundbreaking launch of its first electric mobility product in Africa, the Electric Boda has seen remarkable growth in Nairobi.
The Electric Boda has witnessed an astounding 81% increase in active driver sign-ups since its inception. This surge can be attributed to the product’s cost-effectiveness, offering drivers savings of 30-35% in total ownership costs, with fuel expenses being the most substantial reduction.
The affordability and convenience of Electric Boda have resonated with Nairobi residents, resulting in a 94% increase in trips since its launch in August 2023.
This innovative service also marks a significant step towards Uber’s global commitment to becoming a zero-emissions platform by 2040.
Expanding Reach and Accessibility
In a notable development, Electric Boda has expanded its services to include Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). This area has historically been challenging for two-wheeler mobility products to access for passenger pick-ups, drop-offs, and deliveries.
The inclusion of the CBD in Electric Boda’s operational area signifies a major breakthrough in urban transportation.

Uber’s commitment to safety is evident in the Electric Boda service. To enhance road safety, passengers will now receive dedicated helmets supplied by Greenwheels Africa.
Additionally, Electric Boda drivers are required to undergo alco-blow tests at the beginning and end of their daily shifts, ensuring a safer riding experience for all.
A Catalyst for Innovation and Sustainability
Imran Manji, Head of East Africa at Uber, emphasizes Kenya’s role as a launchpad for innovation. He states, “The successful launch of Uber Electric Boda is testament to this. The introduction of Electric Boda on the platform has given drivers an additional avenue through which to access increased earnings. Furthermore, it remains a top priority for us to continue doing our part to aid the transition to eco-friendly mobility products and support the country’s national sustainability objectives.”
The impact of Electric Boda on drivers’ lives is significant. Joseph, an Electric Boda driver, shares his experience: “Previously, I would use most of my earnings on fuel, repairs, and expenses at home. Now, with Electric Boda, I am able to direct my earnings to paying school fees for my child.” This testimony highlights the transformative potential of the service for drivers and their families.
Aligning with National Policies and Economic Impact
The introduction of Electric Boda aligns perfectly with Kenya’s National Electric Mobility Policy, which aims to create a greener transportation system and implement sustainable road traffic management initiatives.
The boda boda sector’s importance to Kenya’s economy cannot be overstated. According to the World Bank, it employs over 1.5 million young people and contributes approximately Kshs. 202 billion to the economy annually.
Collaboration for a Greener Future
Nabil Anjarwalla, Chief Executive Officer of Greenwheels, expresses pride in the partnership with Uber: “We are proud to mark this milestone in powering Kenya’s transition to green mobility in collaboration with Uber. In our first year, we’ve already carried over 700K passengers and travelled more than 12 million kilometres on electric motorcycles, and there’s more yet to come! As we continue to scale, we’re committed to the reduction in carbon emissions, providing formal employment and stable income to motorcycle drivers, and contributing to helping Nairobians move around the city in a safe, convenient way.”
The Electric Boda initiative represents a significant leap forward in sustainable urban transportation. By combining eco-friendly technology with economic empowerment and safety measures, Uber’s Electric Boda is setting a new standard for the future of mobility in Nairobi and beyond.
