Uber has partnered with Safaricom to offer free mobile data to Kenyans using the Uber and Uber Eats apps. This collaboration, aimed at enhancing access to affordable and reliable mobility, removes data costs for drivers, riders, and delivery partners across Kenya.
Safaricom has zero-rated the apps, with Uber covering data expenses, allowing easier app downloads and seamless usage for customers.
Free Data for Drivers, Riders, and Delivery Partners
Safaricom’s zero-rating allows drivers, delivery partners, and riders to use Uber and Uber Eats apps without consuming their mobile data.
This initiative is especially beneficial for drivers, as it eliminates data costs while they work. Imran Manji, Uber’s Head of East Africa, stated, “As a global company that operates locally, it is important to us to understand local nuances of the market we live and operate in.
Through this partnership with Safaricom, we can help bridge the gap in accessing data for many Kenyans, by which they will be able to access reliable and safe mobility.”
While Kenya has achieved significant internet penetration, challenges remain, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas. According to the Kenya National Digital Masterplan 2022-2032, expanding ICT access is key to economic growth.

By providing free data, Uber and Safaricom aim to make transportation more accessible and affordable, especially for young people who often face data access challenges.
Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa emphasized the company’s commitment to innovative partnerships, stating, “This partnership is part of our goal to provide our customers with innovative solutions that allow them to access essential services even when they do not have data bundles or airtime.”
How to Access Free Data
For those interested in using the free data, a few setup steps are required. Users must disable any VPN blockers and toggle Airplane Mode on and off before accessing the Uber or Uber Eats apps.
Since its launch in Kenya nearly a decade ago, Uber has introduced over nine different services, including Uber Electric Boda, Uber Boda, Uber Reserve, and Uber Comfort, which launched earlier this year.
This expanded range reflects Uber’s commitment to becoming part of Kenyans’ daily mobility ecosystem.
Uber’s partnership with Safaricom offers a straightforward way for drivers and riders to cut costs and access the app without data barriers, enhancing the convenience and affordability of transport options across Kenya.
