WhatsApp has been working on a handy new feature that will let you set HD (high-definition) or 4K resolution as the default quality for sharing images and videos within the app.
This upcoming option will eliminate the need to manually select HD quality every time you want to send media in higher resolution.
Currently, WhatsApp compresses images and videos by default to save data and speed up transfers. While you can tap to share media as documents to retain their original quality, the process is cumbersome.

Last year, WhatsApp introduced an option to share media in up to 4K resolution, but users still have to enable HD mode each time they send something.
The new “Default Upload Quality” setting, spotted by WABetaInfo in WhatsApp beta version 2.24.5.6 for Android, will let you choose between “Standard” and “HD” quality as the global default for all outgoing media. This means your photos and videos will automatically be sent in maximum available resolution without having to manually enable HD mode repeatedly.

The ability to set HD as the permanent default upload quality could significantly boost usage of higher resolution media sharing on WhatsApp. Many casual users are likely unaware of the current HD upload option buried in WhatsApp’s settings. Making maximum quality the standard will ensure media is always shared with optimal clarity and detail.
Furthermore, if you edit an image or video’s resolution within WhatsApp’s built-in tools, the app will remember your last quality preference for all future uploads until you change it again. This eliminates tedious quality adjustments every single time.
The Default Upload Quality option is currently being tested with a limited number of beta users on Android. After thorough testing, WhatsApp plans to roll it out to all Android users over the coming months via an app update. An identical feature for iOS users is expected to follow later.
With HD quality media sharing finally becoming the standard on WhatsApp, users can enjoy crisp, high-resolution photos and videos without constantly juggling settings. The new default quality toggle makes premium media uploads a seamless experience for everyone.
