Automattic, the owner of WordPress.com, has launched a new AI tool dubbed Write Brief with AI, designed to help bloggers write more clearly and succinctly.
Write Brief with AI complements a generative AI writing assistant that Automattic introduced for WordPress last year. The new tool assists users in constructing content using text-based prompts and tweaking the tone of their posts to be more informal or empathetic, among other styles.
The Origin of Write Brief with AI
Automattic revealed that Write Brief with AI emerged from an in-house hack week project. After rolling it out internally and seeing how useful and beloved it quickly became, the company decided to make it available to everyone.

“We saw just how useful and beloved it quickly became, and decided to release it into the world,” Automattic senior product designer Noam Almosnino wrote in a blog post.
Features of Write Brief with AI
Measure Readability: The tool checks the readability of your writing with a simple grade score. Research indicates that a score between 8 and 12 is optimal for readability, with lower numbers indicating better readability. Write Brief with AI calculates your score as you type.
Identify Long-Winded Sentences: Long sentences can tire readers. Write Brief with AI highlights such examples, allowing you to break them down. You can even ask Jetpack AI to simplify them for you.
Boost Confidence: Writing needs to be strong and clear. The tool highlights words that sound uncertain, such as “possibly,” “might,” or “could.” It suggests more assertive alternatives to make your point confidently. Alternatively, you can ask Jetpack AI to remove them with one click.
Simplify Vocabulary: Complex words can bog down your message. Write Brief with AI highlights complex words, like those found in plainlanguage.gov, and suggests simpler alternatives to keep your writing clear and direct.
On the side of the screen, the tool also provides writers with a readability score spanning three metrics: complexity, sentence length, and confidence.
Availability and Accessibility
Currently, Write Brief with AI is available in beta as part of Jetpack, a comprehensive suite of features that enhance the functionality of WordPress.com-hosted websites.
During this initial beta phase, the tool is accessible for free to WordPress.com users. Automattic has also expressed plans to expand the availability of Write Brief with AI to self-hosted WordPress sites in the future.
I should also note that Write Brief with AI is currently limited to English for now.
