Microblogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter) experienced a widespread outage today, leaving users frustrated and unable to access their feeds. Starting around 9 am EAT, users were greeted with an empty “Welcome to your timeline” message instead of the usual stream of tweets.
According to outage reporting site Downdetector, over 70,000 reports were filed by users unable to access the platform. The reason for the outage remains unclear, though some users noted they could still see advertisements and their own tweets on their profiles. Profile searches also seemed to work, though tweets did not load.

Frustrated users took to spaces on the platform to discuss the issues they were facing. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time X has struggled with uptime. The site, now owned by Elon Musk, saw downtime in both March and July of this year.
In July, Downdetector logged multiple complaints across the globe of users receiving “rate limit” messages. On March 6th, thousands were impacted by an outage lasting several hours that prevented access to links, images, and videos. During that incident, the site loaded slowly for many users globally.
We will provide updates on when the popular microblogging site is back online and functioning normally. This story is developing.
Update: December 21st, 9:48AM EAT: Updated to note that service has been restored.
