Before US sanctions, Huawei was one of the top phone brands globally, occasionally outpacing major players like Apple and Samsung.
Some even argue that Huawei’s rapid market growth, especially in the US, was a driving factor behind the sanctions imposed by the US government.
Following these sanctions, Huawei’s market presence dwindled, leaving Apple and Samsung to battle for the top spots in the smartphone industry.
However, this August, another Chinese tech giant has emerged as a serious competitor: Xiaomi.
Xiaomi Surpasses Apple in August 2024
According to Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi overtook Apple to become the second-largest smartphone seller in August 2024, marking the first time the company reached this position since August 2021.
During the first half of the year, Xiaomi reported an impressive 22 percent year-on-year growth in sales, setting the stage for its strong August performance.
Despite its month-on-month sales remaining flat, Xiaomi managed to outpace Apple due to the seasonal decline in iPhone sales.
I should note that August is typically a slower month for Apple, as many consumers delay purchasing new iPhones in anticipation of the September launch of the latest models.

This seasonal pattern played a crucial role in Xiaomi’s ability to overtake Apple in sales rankings.
However, it’s worth noting that the last time Xiaomi achieved this feat was in August 2021, highlighting the cyclical nature of smartphone sales and the importance of strategic timing in product launches.
Strategic Shifts Fuel Xiaomi’s Growth
Xiaomi’s recent growth is the result of strategic shifts made after a challenging 2022 and 2023. Faced with declining sales during these years, the company rethought its product lineup and sales approach, resulting in a stronger market position today.
A key element of Xiaomi’s strategy was to streamline its offerings by focusing on “one hero model per price band,” as noted by Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint.
This approach has allowed Xiaomi to fine-tune its product strategy and focus on delivering value at each price point, appealing to a broad range of consumers.
While Xiaomi’s affordable and mid-range phones continue to perform well, the company has also made strides in the premium segment.
New foldable and ultra phones have helped Xiaomi establish a presence in this high-value market, broadening its appeal beyond entry-level devices.
Meanwhile, economic rebounds in key markets have boosted sales of Xiaomi’s entry-level phones, allowing the company to capitalize on increased consumer spending.
With the recent announcement of the iPhone 16, Apple is expected to reclaim its second position—or potentially even surpass Samsung as the top smartphone brand.
The new iPhone launch will likely boost Apple’s sales, offsetting the typical seasonal slowdown observed in August. However, Xiaomi’s continued innovation and strategic positioning suggest that the battle for market dominance is far from over.
