Xiaomi has always been at the forefront when it comes to making goof budget phones and it’s latest offering is no exception. The Chinese smartphone maker has just unveiled its latest budget-friendly smartphone, the Redmi 12 5G, in India, and it’s set to make a global debut with impressive 5G support. The highlight of this device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC, offering significant improvements over its predecessors and powering the phone at a more affordable price point.
5G Support for Seamless Connectivity
With 5G becoming more prevalent in global markets, budget smartphones need to keep up, and Xiaomi is doing just that with the Redmi 12 5G. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC, manufactured using Samsung’s 4nm process, offers better 5G support compared to previous SoC generations. This allows OEMs like Xiaomi to offer the device at a lower price without compromising on valuable features.

Efficient Performance and Memory Options
The Xiaomi Redmi 12 5G comes in memory options of 4GB, 6GB, or 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, with internal storage choices of 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. Additionally, users can expand the storage further up to 1TB via a microSD card slot. The phone packs a 5,000mAh battery with 18W charging support and includes a 22.5W charger in the box .
Display and Design
The device boasts a 6.79-inch FHD+ LCD with a smooth 90Hz refresh rate for an immersive viewing experience. Protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, the Redmi 12 5G also features a glass back, giving it a premium feel in hand. Furthermore, the phone comes with USB-C for charging, an IR blaster, IP53 rating for water and dust resistance, and the convenience of a 3.5mm headphone jack. It runs on Android 13 with MIUI 14.
Camera Setup and Pricing
In terms of photography, the Redmi 12 5G sports a 50MP f/1.8 primary rear camera, a 2MP rear depth sensor, and an 8MP f/2.0 front camera for selfies and video calls.
The Redmi 12 5G is available in India with three different memory variants. The 4GB+128GB variant is priced at Rs. 11,999 (Ksh 20,745), the 6GB+128GB variant at Rs. 13,499 (Ksh 23,338), and the 8GB+256GB variant at Rs. 15,499 (Ksh 26,796). The phone will also be available in Jade Black, Pastel Blue, and Moonstone Silver colors.
I should note that Xiaomi will also rebrand the phone under the Redmi Note 12R and POCO M6 Pro 5G brandings for different markets. I’m not sure whether we’ll get the Redmi 12 5G in Kenya, but it would be a welcome addition to the Redmi phones currently available in the country.
