Google Reportedly Developing a Standalone Weather App for Android Devices
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Google is said to be working on a new standalone Weather app for Android phones and tablets, following the launch of a similar app for Wear OS last year. The search giant’s move to create a dedicated weather app for Android comes as a response to users’ desires for a simpler way to access local weather information on their devices.

A Standalone Weather App for Android: What to Expect

Users can expect the standalone Weather app for Android to operate independently from the Google app, delivering a more streamlined experience for checking weather forecasts and local weather conditions. It is anticipated that this new app will provide timely updates and user interface (UI) enhancements on par with other core Google apps.

Integration with Google Clock

In addition to functioning as a standalone app, weather results for each city will reportedly be integrated within the Google Clock app for a better user experience. This could potentially include displaying high/low temperatures and general conditions in the region.

Weather Notifications

The new standalone Weather app is expected to include a range of weather notifications, such as Clear day, Blizzard, Very hot, Tropical storm or hurricane, Flurries, Low visibility, and Nighttime isolated scattered thunderstorms, among others.

Possible Home Screen Widget

There’s a possibility that the weather details could also be displayed on the Clock’s home screen widget, giving users quick access to local weather information without needing to open the app itself.

The Journey to a Dedicated Weather App

Google I/O 2023

The development of a standalone Weather app for Android has been a long time coming. In October 2022, Google launched a standalone Weather app for Wear OS devices, leaving Android users wondering when their devices would receive the same treatment.

Google Clock App 7.5 Hints at Standalone Weather App

Recently, some digging within version 7.5 of the Google Clock app by 9to5Google uncovered hints of the new Weather app for Android. The code suggests the presence of a package named “com.google.android.apps.weather,” indicating that the app could potentially launch sometime after the release of the Google Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold.

Why a Dedicated Google Weather App for Android is Necessary

The lack of a dedicated weather app on Android devices has long been a source of frustration for users. Currently, Android users must rely on the Google app to access weather results, which can be cumbersome and inefficient. A standalone Weather app for Android would simplify this process and provide a more user-friendly experience.

Catching Up with Wear OS

The development of a dedicated Weather app for Android would bring parity between Google’s mobile and wearable platforms, as Wear OS devices already have access to a standalone Weather app.

Material You Treatment

Google Weather for Android recently received the Material You treatment, bringing it up to date with other Google-branded apps such as Google News. The creation of a standalone Weather app could further enhance the user experience, with regular updates and UI refreshes.

Potential Release Timeline for The Google Weather App

While it’s difficult to pinpoint an exact release date for the standalone Weather app for Android, the presence of the “com.google.android.apps.weather” package within the Google Clock app’s code suggests that it could arrive in the not-too-distant future.

After Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold Launch

The standalone Weather app could potentially launch after the release of the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold, which are expected to hit the market in less than a month from now.

How a Standalone Google Weather App Could Benefit Users

The introduction of a standalone Weather app for Android devices would offer numerous benefits to users, including a more streamlined experience for checking weather forecasts and local weather conditions.

Easier Access to Weather Information

With a dedicated Weather app, Android users would no longer have to rely on the Google app to access weather results. This would make it much easier to quickly check the local weather without needing to navigate through multiple screens.

Timely Updates and UI Enhancements

As a standalone app, the new Weather app would likely receive timely updates and UI refreshes, ensuring that it remains in line with other core Google apps in terms of features and functionality.

Improved Integration with Google Clock App

The integration of weather results within the Google Clock app would provide an even more seamless experience for users, allowing them to access local weather information directly from the Clock app.

It’s clear that the development of a standalone Weather app for Android devices is an exciting prospect for users who have long been seeking a more user-friendly way to access local weather information. With the potential for improved integration with the Clock app, timely updates, and enhanced UI features, this new app could revolutionize the way Android users check the weather on their devices. While the exact release timeline remains uncertain, it’s likely that we’ll see the standalone Weather app arrive on Android devices in the near future.
